The assumption of the dual-natured economic man tries to fully reflect the economic body*s dual motivation of self-interest and altruism and the relationship between them. It aims to reasonably explain the rational and irrational status involved, taking into consideration the maximization of society' s interests and legitimate personal benefits, and their systemic conditions as a whole, thus creating a new design for the interest relations among and behavioral means of economic men. Ideas and methods related to Marxist historical materialism, dialectics, the labor theory of value, surplus value theory and scientific socialism, constitute the most important theoretical basis of such assumption. This assumption is highly consistent with the requirements of sustainable development, which cannot be achieved under the drive of pure self-interest with no promotion of altruistic behavior. Modem society requires any economic body to pay attention to both self-interest and altruism, improve its rational level, and change its behavior pattern.
